It’s hard to overemphasize the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on us ...

It’s hard to overemphasize the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on us and how those ripple effects are still around. In 2020, with the world shut down, schools, colleges, and universities lost one of their key selling points with prospective students: the campus tour. The inability to bring people on campus to get a firsthand look at their future was a real issue, and so many of these institutions turned instead to a rising new technology: virtual campus tours.

Virtual campus tours are delivered either through interactive photo and video online or, in more advanced versions, through VR headsets. And while social distancing is no longer a thing, virtual campus tours have online continued to grow in popularity as schools find new, tech-forward ways of enhancing the traditional experience.

Virtual vs. AR vs. VR

Let’s set out some real quick definitions so we’re all starting from the same page:

Virtual campus tours – An umbrella term that encompasses any kind of campus tour where the prospective students are not physically present at the school location

Augmented reality (AR) tours – These are campus tours where the prospective student is on campus and using VR glasses or mobile apps to get an enhanced view of the school

Virtual reality (VR) tours – A type of virtual campus tour that is conducted by the prospective student putting on a VR headset to walk through the location

How AR and VR Are Being Used for Campus Tours

How colleges, schools, and universities are leveraging augmented and virtual campus tours varies a lot depending on their goals and resources.

For example, an AR tour could be a mobile app that tracks a student’s location and offers deeper information on their surroundings. It can go a step further and leverage the cameras on their smartphones so that, when students hold them up, they can see digital overlays across the physical space. A school could also provide wearable AR glasses that interact with the mobile app and student’s phone to provide detailed overlays and even gamified quests.

For virtual campus tours, at its base level, it goes beyond a simple photo gallery and includes components like:

360-degree, panoramic views in any direction

Individualized, self-guided navigation

Informational overlays and/or clickable, interactive hotspots

Compatibility with a wide variety of devices

Always-on, 24/7 availability

Using these features, schools can allow prospective students to “walk” into a dorm room, explore classrooms and facilities, and develop a clearer picture of what life on campus looks like. This can be done through a series of 360-degree photos (think: Google Street View) or fully immersive photos. Both online and VR headset virtual tours can allow students to sit in on a class, meet faculty and staff, let students express thoughts and interest in the moment, and even explore some of the community around the campus.

Benefits of Enhanced Virtual Campus Tours

Even before 2020, virtual campus tours were on the rise because of the number of benefits they provide. Recent reports and surveys have found that:

Schools with virtual tours experience a 16% in applications

Universities using virtual tours attracted and engaged 30% more prospects

94% of admissions staff believe virtual tours increased their productivity and efficiency

And that’s just the start.

Expanded reach

Since virtual campus tours can be accessed anywhere in the world, that means your pool of prospective students gets a lot bigger. This includes expanding your outreach to international students who can’t spend the time and money on extensive travel. It also helps you connect with potential students in your region who may not have the financial resources to drive over to your campus for a visit.

Accessibility

Virtual and augmented reality tours increase how accessible your school is for interested students in a few different ways. For example, your campus might be compliant with the American Disability Act, but it might still be difficult for students living with disabilities to travel to you just for a short period of time. It’s also always available, throughout the day, every day, without having to schedule an appointment or rearrange their calendar to come on an appointed day. This is especially important for prospective students who are nontraditional and maybe trying to juggle higher education with a full-time job or other responsibilities.

Personalization

Depending on the prospect’s age, goals, and interests, they’re going to have different parts of your campus that are the most applicable to them. Virtual campus tours give you a much better opportunity to collect this data and utilize it to give them a more individualized experience. You can also much more easily put up translations in different languages, further expanding your recruitment pool.

Data-gathering

For schools, virtual and augmented reality campus tours can provide a goldmine of data, allowing your team to see where potential students went, how long they stayed, what they clicked on and were interested in, and additional useful information. These metrics not only give you a clearer idea of how your virtual tour is working , but also trends in your demographics and ideal customer base.

Best Practices for Creating Virtual Campus Tours

If you don’t already have a virtual or augmented reality campus tour established for your institution, here are a few things to keep top of mind while creating one:

Know your specific goals — Always, always our first piece of advice. Decide what you want prospects to come away with, what you want to highlight, and how you’re going to stand out.

Make it extremely visible — Any virtual tour should be able to be featured on your school’s site and social media platforms, which means optimizing it for these different channels from the jump.

Establish featured locations and hotspots — Especially as you’re starting out, it may not be feasible to put absolutely everything on the tour. Make a list of all the potential places, and prioritize the ones that really stand out.

Develop the relevant information — Clicking on a hotspot in either a VR or AR tour allows students to dive deeper into areas of interest. Take the time to make this content interesting and engaging, as well as relevant to them.

Consider gamification — This is entirely optional, but integrating challenges, prompts, or digital scavenger hunts can help boost engagement and keep prospects hanging around to the end.

It’s important you establish these foundations before starting to build out the VR or AR campus tour or looking into engaging a company to do that for you.

Virtual Campus, Real Connection

Deciding on a higher education institution can be a very big decision; it’s a matter of both your finances and your future. But schools that offer virtual campus tours allow students to explore in a way that saves them both time and money, while in turn potentially improving their own engagement, enrollment, and admissions productivity. If you’re interested in learning more, you can always contact our marketing experts at EdwardsSchoen, and we’d be happy to discuss options with you on how to connect with your ideal prospective students.

If there is one thing that can bring workers from all kinds ...

If there is one thing that can bring workers from all kinds of industries together, it’s the experience of surviving a compressed project timeline. It is inevitable at some point that you will get stuck between a rock and a hard place, having to get something across the finish line in less time than you would prefer. But there can be benefits to aggressive timelines that we want to (reluctantly) showcase.

It’s All Your Fault, Parkinson

“Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”

British naval historian Cyril Northcote Parkinson wrote this in a satirical essay in The Economist back in 1955. While he’d intended it as a specific critique on government administration and bureaucratic efficiency, it rang true across the business world, leading to Parkinson writing a book, Parkinson’s Law: Or the Pursuit of Progress, two years later.

“In exactly the same way nobody bothered and nobody cared, before Newton’s day, why an apple should drop to the ground when it might so easily fly up after leaving the tree,” wrote Straits Times editor-in-chief, Allington Kennard, who continued, “There is less gravity in Professor Parkinson’s Law, but hardly less truth.”

Source
Tweet

Essentially, Parkinson’s Law explains how a task tends to take up the entirety of the time allotted to it, even if it can be completed in less. The why behind this behavior is a little murkier, but it’s been attributed to our tendency to estimate how much time is available instead of how much time we actually need, procrastinate and delay starting, and perceived obligation to use all the time we’ve been given.

Now to be perfectly clear: Parkinson’s Law isn’t a tested, scientific principle, but it does line up really well with a lot of human nature. And it’s a good argument for why we don’t just need hard deadlines, but why more aggressive timelines—however much they might be disliked—can be beneficial.

Reasons Why You Might Want to Get More Aggressive

Listen, no one wants to admit it out loud, but we’ve all probably been in the position where, up against an aggressive deadline, we’ve accomplished a lot more than we thought we could. We’ve risen to the occasion, pushed our output, and surprised even ourselves.

Research suggests that a tight timeline can:

Increase focus and motivation, both for individuals and the overall team

Encourage teamwork and relationship-building as people bond together toward a common goal

Promote efficiency and productivity, reducing the amount of time that is wasted and potentially even finishing early

Encourage creative problem-solving skills as less time requires people to come up with innovative, outside-the-box solutions

Build confidence and capacity as everyone discovers just what they’re capable of

Now, this isn’t an endorsement to just start throwing compressed timelines at every project because it can blow up with serious negative consequences without the right foundation. And it should be used strategically so you don’t end up with teams of people suffering from burnout.

Before setting an aggressive deadline:

Make sure you have the right team — The wrong skillsets, clashing personalities, no one willing to lead — any one of these personnel issues on a team can spell disaster for a project before it even starts. The team members on a project like this need to be able to work cohesively and with a positive attitude.

Break down the project into clear tasks and goals — Looking at a whole project can be daunting, which is why it’s so important to divide it into smaller responsibilities. Each person involved can then focus on the specific tasks they need to handle instead of getting overwhelmed.

Create a detailed strategic plan — Once you have the project broken down, each piece needs to be arranged along the compressed timeline as needed in order to hit the deadline. This means clearly understanding which parts will be happening concurrently, which rely on something else getting done, and what the ripple effects will be if checkpoints aren’t reached on time.

Shorten or reduce meetings — Anyone working on a tight turnaround doesn’t want to waste time sitting in a meeting when they could be completing objectives. Those employees need to be able to clear their schedules as much as possible until the project is done.

Maintain open and honest communication and continuous check-ins — Everyone needs to be encouraged and able to communicate without anxiety. Having someone tasked with consistently checking in with each team member, seeing how they’re doing and what they might need, enables an efficient, productive environment.

Like Nike Says: Just Do It

We have a long-standing, love-hate relationship with compressed timelines and tight turnarounds on projects. As frustrating it can be to get tasked with completing something in less time than you think you need, it has also driven us to accomplish more, innovate more, and drive ourselves further.

It’s a big reason why EdwardsSchoen stays nimble, so we can deliver the results our clients are looking for on the schedule they need. Because aggressive deadlines are going to happen; it’s up to us to make the most of them.

Everyone’s being told to use AI. We’ve written articles on this very blog about how it’s a tool that small business owners should be leveraging to make their lives easier, including using it to create content. The trouble is, AI-generated content often reads like…AI-generated content. It can sound cool and detached in a way that might be off-putting for readers. To the point that there are now a number of different tools launched with the goal of “humanizing” AI text. There is also some evidence that using too much AI-generated content can come across to Google as spam and lead to a hit in your rankings.
So how can small businesses get the benefits of AI without losing their distinct brand voice?

How to Write Great AI Prompts

Let’s start at the beginning because there are ways you can change up how you’re prompting an AI text generator that will lead to better content. AI language models don’t have human instinct; they rely on statistical probability to build sentences, so the more information and guidance you can give, the better.

Give it a point of view. Telling it to write an article on green energy might get you several hundred words of readable text. But telling it, instead, to write about green energy from the perspective of an expert HVAC technician or the CEO of a wind turbine company gives the AI a more drilled down angle to approach the article from.

Be specific about what you’re wanting. Let’s take the example from the previous point where you’re generating an article about “green energy.” But green energy is a big, open-ended topic that will likely result in very high-level, generic content. Instead, identify what specifically you want to address and spell that out. For example, “You are an experienced HVAC technician. Describe how recent developments in green energy production are affecting the costs of heating and air conditioning for home owners.”

Have it revise if you need to. If you input your prompt and get the response and it’s not quite there, treat it as a first draft and keep the conversation with the AI tool going. Ask it to rewrite or revise based on your feedback, like “make it more personable” or “include more specific examples.”

How to Edit Your AI Content

The truth is, generating a piece of content via AI does not remove the hands-on human component. It’s perfect for making a starting point, but before you post it or promote it anywhere, it will need a closer look. AI is handy, but far from perfect, so let’s take a look at what you should be prioritizing as you read through.

Formal, formulaic sentences – AI generator tools often skew toward a more formal style with longer, complex sentences and structure. Quick, quippy lines or sentence fragments are not really AI’s style, which can make it sound a little robotic.

Inaccurate facts – AI will very confidently tell you specific facts, but you should always double-check what it spits out. It is, after all, a machine learning model predominantly built on statistics and probability moreso than complicated context. Never post until you know you’re not putting out misinformation.

Weird expressions – Have you ever used the text predictor on your smartphone to message someone, only for it to recommend some really wild options for the next word in your sentence? While AI tools are more sophisticated than text predictors, they’re still capable of putting together expressions and idioms that do not actually exist in the English language.

Additionally, you can and should take some time to work your own flavor and personality into the text to really bring it to life for your customers. Consider doing things like:

Adding personal details and anecdotes – Even better if this is a customer-related situation that relates to your business services. But the main point is to personalize wherever you can within the content.

Adding humor, emotion, and/or empathy – AI tools generally can’t replicate these aspects of human-created content. As you’re reading through the content, look for opportunities to add real wit and feeling.

Check for brand tone and voice – One of the easiest ways to do this is to compare the piece to the best examples you have of your brand voice. Read them side-by-side and ask yourself: do these sound like they’re coming from the same brand? If not, then you need to go back through the AI content and change things up.

Know AI’s Limits So You Can Benefit from Its Strengths

Ultimately, AI is a tool, and a tool is only as good as the person who is using it. It can be really helpful, especially for small business owners, but it can’t fully replace the human touch. Leverage it effectively, as a starting point and a foundation that can save you time, money, and resources, but don’t skip the final step where you sit down and review everything to ensure your voice isn’t getting lost in the mix. Even the handiest digital tool isn’t worth losing sight of your company’s unique brand.

In the competitive world of home services, word-of-mouth remains one of the ...

In the competitive world of home services, word-of-mouth remains one of the most powerful tools for attracting new customers. Whether you’re a plumber, HVAC technician, landscaper, or electrician, chances are your next client is asking a friend or neighbor for a recommendation before they open a search engine. That’s where a well-designed referral program comes in.

Referral programs incentivize your happy customers to spread the word, turning them into active ambassadors for your brand. They offer a win-win: customers get rewarded for referrals, and your business gets a steady stream of new clients who already trust you because someone they know vouched for you. In this post, we’ll look at how home service businesses can build and manage an effective referral program that delivers measurable growth.

Why Referral Programs Work So Well in Home Services

Before diving into how to create a program, it’s worth understanding why referrals are especially effective in the home services industry.

Trust is everything. When someone lets a contractor into their home, they want to know they can trust them. A referral from a friend, family member, or neighbor carries more weight than any ad.

Homeowners talk. From roof repairs to backyard renovations, homeowners are constantly sharing experiences with others. If your service stood out, your customers will talk about it, but a referral program gives them a reason to do it sooner.

Referrals bring high-quality leads. People who come through referrals are more likely to book, spend more, and remain loyal because they already trust your business.

Building a Referral Program That Works

A referral program doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does need to be intentional. Follow these steps to create a program that’s easy to use and valuable for both you and your customers.

Step 1: Define Your Goals

What do you want your referral program to accomplish? Most businesses are aiming for more qualified leads, but you might also be looking to:

Increase customer retention

Boost off-season bookings

Promote a new service

Clear goals will help you determine the structure of the program and measure its success later.

Step 2: Decide on the Incentive

Your referral incentive is the heart of the program. It needs to be enticing enough to motivate action without cutting too deeply into your margins. Here are a few options commonly used in home service industries:

Flat cash rewards: $25–$100 for each successful referral

Discounts: 10–20% off a future service

Gift cards: To a local restaurant, coffee shop, or online retailer

Free services or upgrades: A free tune-up, priority scheduling, or premium product add-on

Make sure the incentive makes sense for your audience. If most of your customers are homeowners with families, a gift card to a local family-friendly restaurant might go over better than a Starbucks card.

Pro tip: Consider rewarding both the referrer and the new customer. This double-sided model gives each party something to gain and increases the likelihood of follow-through.

Step 3: Make It Easy to Refer

The simpler it is to refer someone, the more likely your customers are to do it. That means:

Creating a clear landing page or referral form on your website

Offering a shareable link via email or text

Including QR codes or tear-off flyers with invoices

Giving your field team talking points to promote the program in person

Make sure your messaging is clear: “Refer a friend, get $50 off your next service when they book.”

Also, don’t forget to explain the how. How do they refer someone? How do they claim their reward? How long does it take? Removing friction from the process is key.

Step 4: Promote the Program Consistently

Your referral program won’t go anywhere if people don’t know about it. Make it part of your regular communication strategy:

Include it in all follow-up emails after service

Mention it on social media with testimonials or success stories

Add signage to your trucks or uniforms

Highlight it in seasonal newsletters or promotions

Train your technicians to mention it when the job is done

Think of your referral program like any other marketing effort—it needs regular visibility and reinforcement to be effective.

Step 5: Track, Measure, and Optimize

You need to track referrals to make the program work. Use a CRM or even a basic spreadsheet to keep tabs on:

Who made the referral

Who was referred

Whether they booked a service

What rewards have been issued

This data helps you manage rewards, but it also provides valuable insight into your most loyal customers. You can use this info to create “super referrer” programs or to test new ideas like tiered rewards.

Also, track how many of your new leads are coming from referrals and compare that to other lead sources. This will help you assess ROI and make informed decisions about future marketing investments.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Even the best-intentioned referral programs can stumble. Here are a few missteps to watch out for:

Complicated processes: If customers have to jump through hoops to refer someone or claim a reward, they’ll give up.

Delayed rewards: Don’t make people wait months for a payout. Keep it timely and transparent.

Failing to follow up: If someone refers a new customer and never hears back from you, it can damage the relationship.

Not training your team: If your techs or office staff don’t understand the program, they won’t promote it effectively.

A Small Investment for Big Returns

The beauty of referral programs is that they leverage something your business already has, happy customers. By giving those customers a small nudge, you turn them into one of your most effective marketing channels.

You don’t need a massive advertising budget to start seeing results. With a thoughtful incentive, simple process, and consistent promotion, you can create a referral program that keeps your home service business growing job after job, season after season.

And remember, when a new customer calls and says, “My neighbor told me to call you,” that’s not just good news, it’s the sound of a smart strategy at work.

As we approach this 4th of July here in the United States, thoughts turn to fireworks, barbeque, and maybe some watermelon. But this is the 249th anniversary of the United States! (2025 minus 1776… carry the one… yep. Nailed it!) So, let’s take a moment to think about some “Founding Fathers”. Who were they? What did they say? What can they teach us that’s relevant to today? And, as I believe the great Abraham Lincoln asked, “How can I tell that the past isn’t a fiction designed to account for the discrepancy between my immediate physical sensations and my state of mind?” *

Ok, maybe we skip that last one, I don’t want to get that existential. Also, I don’t want to get into discussions on originalism (don’t get political Allen, don’t get political). What I do want to do is talk about the “Founding Fathers (and Mothers) of Marketing”.

If you studied marketing in college (I did not), some of this may not be new. But looking back on some of the things these people pioneered might give us some ideas on where we are and where we could potentially go given the current landscape.

Lessons from the Past

Before there were TikToks, DMs, and hyper-targeted algorithms, there were minds grappling with the same fundamental questions: What makes people notice a product? What gets them to care? And how do you keep them coming back?

Let’s take a look at a few of marketing’s most influential figures and what their philosophies can still teach us today.

Claude C. Hopkins: The Power of Testing and Specificity

One of the original “founders” of modern advertising, Claude Hopkins believed in two things above all: testing and truth. He popularized the idea of split testing ads and was obsessed with data before “data-driven” became a buzzword. In his world, good marketing wasn’t about fluff, it was about specificity, clarity, and results.

“The competent advertising man must understand psychology. The more he knows about it the better. He must learn that certain effects lead to certain reactions.”

Today, whether you’re running an email campaign or tweaking website copy, Hopkins would tell you: Test it. Tweak it. Test it again.

David Ogilvy: The Original Brand Strategist

Often called the “Father of Advertising,” Ogilvy took a more polished approach, focusing on brand image and storytelling. He believed your brand should have a distinct personality and that everything from your headline to your logo should reinforce it.

He was reminding us to respect the audience, to write as if we were talking to a smart, curious person (not shouting at a billboard). Still true, even when the audience is scrolling at 80mph on a phone.

Rosser Reeves: USP is King

Rosser Reeves coined the term “Unique Selling Proposition”; the one thing that separates your product from every other. If he were around today, he’d be the guy saying, “What’s your hook?” in every brainstorming meeting.

Be specific and test everything.

Know your brand and speak clearly to your audience.

Find your one-of-a-kind hook and hammer it home.

Don’t be afraid to go bold and big.

Focus on real value, not gimmicks.

AI is shaking up a lot of different parts of marketing, and other industries for that matter. Maybe it’s the archaeologist in me (that’s what my degree is in), but I believe there are lessons and truths we need to make sure not to forget. So, as we celebrate a holiday built on bold ideas, risk-taking, and a bit of rebellious energy, maybe it’s the perfect time to ask yourself: Is your marketing just a bunch of bravado, or is it starting a movement?

There’s a very old-fashioned, stereotypical image of what “business networking” looks like — men in dark suits, shaking hands over drinks in a smoky room somewhere. But networking isn’t a technique only for the rich and elite; every business — but especially small and growing businesses — benefit from active networking efforts. Creating and nurturing connections within your community and your industry can increase brand awareness, open you up to new customers, provide guidance and support, and expand word-of-mouth marketing.

11 Networking Tips for Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs

Sold? Ready to start building your business network? Perfect. Let’s take a look at some necessary steps and important tips for doing that.

1.) Start with a plan.

You’re going to see this recommendation at the top of almost every list we write because it’s the foundation for everything else. You can absolutely go about networking at random and just throw yourself into the fray, but you’re likely to waste time and energy and money without substantial results. So it’s important to sit down, look at your goals, and build your networking plan in step with that. Decide who is best positioned to be the point person and represent your company. And instead of saying yes to absolutely everything, measure every networking opportunity against whether it can meaningfully move you toward your goals.

2.) Utilize your warm market.

You likely already have the beginnings of a business network, even if you haven’t done much to cultivate it yet. Whether it’s someone you worked with before or a loyal and satisfied customer of your business, your warm market is the perfect place to start reaching out, even with just a quick message to see how they’re doing. It seems small, but it’s a low-effort step that can pay dividends in the future.

3.) Look for new opportunities and events.

At this point, it’s time to start branching out and creating brand-new connections. This can come in a variety of forms, which include local business organizations, small business associations, trade events and conferences, training seminars, and more. A lot of it will look like in-person, one-to-one interactions and relationship building because 77% of networkers prefer meeting face-to-face because so much of communication (as much as 70%) is nonverbal. If these aren’t skills that come completely naturally to you, the next few tips are especially for you.

4.) Practice your elevator pitch.

If someone at a conference asks you what you and your business do, do you have an answer for them? Something succinct and attention-grabbing that really sells what your company is aiming to accomplish? Before you hit the conference center floor, make sure you’ve honed and practiced your elevator pitch and the quick and memorable talking points that sell your business objectives.

6 Organizations Important for Small Business Networking

Your local chamber of commerce — aimed at furthering local business interests

SCORE — the nation’s largest network of volunteer, expert business mentors

NASE — the National Association for the Self-Employed

Business Networking International — a global networking organization

Entrepreneurs’ Organization — a peer-to-peer entrepreneur networking group

LinkedIn — both in regular posts and connections and in groups

5.) It’s about them, not you.

The same skills you’ve probably used to make friends over the course of your life are essential when it comes to creating business connections. You can’t go into these situations and dominate the conversation with talking about you and your business and what you’re accomplishing. You want to focus on the other person, really listen to them, and ask them questions about themselves.

6.) Just be yourself.

Trying to please everyone is a losing game; you’re never going to accomplish that, no matter how you present yourself. So your best bet is authenticity. People will easily sniff out if you’re working an angle or being too sales-y, so leave all the Glengarry Glen Ross tactics at the door. Just be a regular person, hanging out with other regular people, talking about the trials, tribulations, and passions of small business ownership.

7.) Community partnerships are key.

While national trade events and conferences are big and flashy, don’t overlook what you can do right in your community. Maybe there’s a kids’ sports team you can sponsor or an event you can cohost that connects and brings people together. “Buy local” is a growing rallying cry, which is an advantage for small businesses who are ready and willing to participate in what’s going on in their town.

8.) Have something to offer.

For better or worse, business relationships are transactional, and the more you can be helpful and demonstrate value to those you connect with, the more likely your network will grow. The easiest way to do this is to prioritize being a giver. Have some really clever tips or insights? Don’t gatekeep them; share them freely. Have two people you know who would really benefit from connecting with each other? Help get them in touch—like you’re Business Bumble. Want reviews and referrals? Start by giving them. All of this boosts your long-term networking potential by building trust and goodwill.

9.) Get social.

While in-person networking is still huge, it’s important to note that online networking is also a major component of expanding your business connections. And that means your web and social media presence needs to be both easy to find and actively engaged. If you meet half a dozen great contacts at a meetup, but they look you up only to find your social platforms a ghost town and your site looking like it was built on Geocities circa 1999, your budding relationships are likely going to die off really quick. Make sure your digital face is as polished as possible.

10.) Relationships take work.

Business networking isn’t a one-and-done, set-it-and-forget-it deal. It’s important that you invest time in nurturing these connections once they’re made by regularly reaching out and staying in touch. These ought to be real, personalized messages and conversations, as well, not generic emails or pestering sales pitches.

11.) Step back, assess, and make changes.

Like any part of a marketing plan, you don’t just run with one strategy forever. You would never keep plugging away with an ineffective email campaign or throw money into social ads that aren’t producing results. You should do the same with your small business networking. Take a look at the events and trainings and meetups you attend during the year, the organizations you join, the online value-add content you produce. What was worth your time? What produced results? Shift those to the center of your focus and don’t feel bad about cutting what isn’t working.

When you’re running a home service business, whether it’s HVAC, plumbing, landscaping, ...

When you’re running a home service business, whether it’s HVAC, plumbing, landscaping, or pest control, timing matters. Just like the seasons impact what services your customers need, they should also shape the way you market your business. A smart, seasonal marketing strategy not only helps you stay top-of-mind all year round, but it can also ensure that you’re spending your marketing dollars in the most effective way possible.

In this post, we’ll walk through how home service businesses can shift their marketing approach with the seasons to maximize leads, boost bookings, and build a loyal customer base.

Why Seasonality Matters in Home Services

Unlike retail or e-commerce businesses that may see a spike around holidays, home service businesses are more directly affected by environmental and seasonal changes. When temperatures spike, people need AC repairs. After a big storm, they need roof inspections. During spring, they might start thinking about landscaping.

Recognizing these patterns lets you plan ahead. Instead of waiting until demand hits, you can position your business in front of customers before they even know they need you. That’s the sweet spot.

Spring: Prep, Renew, and Promote

Primary Services to Promote:

Landscaping and lawn care

Gutter cleaning

Roof inspections

HVAC tune-ups

Pest control

Marketing Tips for Spring:

Spring is all about renewal, and that makes it the perfect time for homeowners to start thinking about improving or preparing their properties. Your messaging should reflect this fresh start. Use language like “Get your home ready for summer” or “Start the season off right.”

This is also a good time to promote maintenance services. An HVAC tune-up before summer or a pest control spray before bugs invade helps you capture business early in the season and build relationships with homeowners who might need you again later.

Spring Marketing Ideas:

Run “early bird” discounts for seasonal services

Launch a spring checklist campaign via email or social media

Partner with local nurseries or hardware stores for joint promotions

Use geo-targeted Google Ads to catch homeowners searching for seasonal services in your area

Summer: Heat, Holidays, and High Demand

If your area is expecting a heatwave or cold snap, promote relevant services in real time. Weather-responsive ads and emails perform especially well for urgent services.

Don’t reinvent the wheel every year. Update and reuse successful blog posts, social media campaigns, and ad creatives with new offers or visuals.

Create landing pages and blog content focused on seasonal keywords like “spring AC tune-up” or “fall roof inspection” to capture organic traffic all year long.

Marketing for Every Season

Running a home service business means you’re already in tune with the seasons, but your marketing should be too. By aligning your campaigns with what homeowners need at different times of the year, you can stay one step ahead of the competition, improve lead quality, and keep your schedule full year-round.

Whether you’re firing up summer sales or prepping for a cold winter, a strategic seasonal approach helps you meet your customers where they are, right when they need you most.

The holiday season is an important time for businesses and educational institutions to engage with their audiences. Whether you’re a small business looking to boost sales, a home service company aiming to stay top-of-mind, or a college striving to connect with prospective students, tailoring your holiday messaging and leveraging the right channels can make all the difference.

Here are some strategies to help ensure your holiday communication resonates with your audience:

1. Understand Your Audience’s Holiday Needs

The foundation of effective holiday messaging is understanding what your audience values during this time of year.

Colleges and Universities: Prospective students often seek clarity on enrollment deadlines, financial aid, or campus events. Highlight how your institution can support their educational goals during a season of reflection and planning.

Small Businesses: Customers prioritize convenience, deals, and unique gift ideas. Showcase how your offerings make holiday preparations easier or more meaningful.

Home Service Companies: Emphasize reliability and readiness. Highlight your ability to handle emergencies or help with holiday preparations, such as HVAC maintenance or plumbing fixes.

Tailor your messaging to reflect the season. This isn’t just about adding snowflakes to your logo, it’s about aligning your content with the spirit of the holidays.

Storytelling: Everyone loved a good story. So, share stories that evoke holiday nostalgia or showcase how your organization has made a difference for clients or students.

Visual Content: Use festive colors, cheerful imagery, and holiday-themed videos to grab attention on social media and your website. As with most things these days, you only have moments to get someone’s attention.

Personalized Messages: Send tailored emails or direct mail with holiday greetings, special offers, or reminders that connect emotionally with recipients.

The 4th of July is more than just fireworks and BBQs—it’s an opportunity for businesses to shine and show off what makes them unique. Whether you’re in higher education, a small business, a home service company, or a B2B firm, Independence Day is your chance to connect with your audience in fun and memorable ways. We’ve put together a list of some different ideas to show off what makes you special this holiday.

1. Host a Themed Event

This idea does require a bit of work and will probably vary quite a bit depending on the type of business you run along with the values you want to present. Since there is so much variability, I’ve broken this out to a cover a few different possibilities for different industries. Pick and choose parts of these to find something that works for you.

Educational Institutions

Picture this: a campus decked out in red, white, and blue, with patriotic decorations everywhere you look. Prospective students and their families are enjoying a BBQ, exploring your amazing facilities, and getting a taste of campus life. This is a perfect time to showcase your programs and community spirit. Provide exclusive on-the-spot application fee waivers or scholarships for attendees, and boom, you’ve got an Independence Day open house.

Small Businesses

Set up a BBQ outside your store, offer special discounts, and have games or raffles for customers. Highlight those local products you’re proud of and remind your community why they love shopping with you. It’s a Patriotic Sale and grill-out everyone can enjoy and remember you for.

Home Service Companies

Set up a booth at a local 4th of July event and offer free or discounted services in a “Home of the Brave Giveaway.” On-the-spot consultations can show off your expertise and connect you with potential clients who need a helping hand around the house. Being involved in local events and showing community support can go a long way to developing a positive reputation.

B2B Firms

Invite local businesses and partners for an afternoon or evening of networking, complete with patriotic-themed snacks and drinks. Use this opportunity to discuss collaborations and showcase your services in a casual environment. I recently attended an event similar to this with my cousin who owns a brewery. We chatted with other business owners and were able to spark some connections that could have lasting potential.

2. Create Themed Content

Content is probably one of the easiest and most accessible ways for a company or organization to be part of the discussion and highlight their value. The challenge comes in being able to rise above all the noise that exists out there. Here are a few ways to do that.

Blog Posts and Articles

Publish blog posts or articles related to the 4th of July and include an angle that is relevant to your audience. For instance, a home service company can write about “5 Tips to Keep Your Home Safe During the 4th of July,” while an educational institution might publish “The History of Independence Day: Lessons for Modern Students.” These tie in the theme of the 4th with potentially something your audience is interested in.

Social Media Campaigns

Launch a social media campaign with patriotic hashtags, user-generated content, and engaging posts. Share behind-the-scenes preparations for your events, highlight customer stories, or run a “Best 4th of July Recipe” contest. Make your followers feel like they are part of the celebration.

The biggest thing to remember with both of these is that whatever you produce has to be something that matters to your audience. Simply throwing out a social media post with an American flag and a “Happy 4th of July” caption will have little if any impact. Speak to your individual audience with something unique or get left in the pile with the millions of others.

3. Offer Exclusive 4th of July Promotions

Limited-Time Offers

Create exclusive, limited-time offers to drive sales. A small business might offer a “Buy One, Get One Free” deal on popular items, while a home service company could provide discounted rates for services booked over the holiday weekend.

Bundle Deals

Bundle deals can be particularly effective. For example, a B2B firm could offer a package deal on consulting services, while a higher education institution might bundle application fees with free campus tours or merchandise.

4. Engage with the Community

Even if your organization runs completely online, you still live in a community. From big cities to small towns, the 4th of July generally provides an excellent opportunity to create some engagement.

Sponsor Local Events

Sponsoring local 4th of July events is a fantastic way to get your name out there. Whether it’s a fireworks show, a parade, or a community BBQ, having your business’s name associated with beloved local traditions can boost your reputation and visibility.

Community Service

Participate in community service projects. Organize a neighborhood clean-up after the festivities or sponsor a local charity event. This not only demonstrates your commitment to the community but also provides positive exposure for your business.

5. Decorate and Celebrate

This is probably a no-brainer for any company with a storefront, but there are some options to for other businesses. Even if you have a storefront, you could potentially up the game a little without it looking like Lady Liberty vomited bunting all over your store.

Storefront Decorations

Deck out your storefront in red, white, and blue. Eye-catching decorations can draw in foot traffic and create a festive atmosphere. Use window displays to highlight special products or services. Consider working with other local businesses to create a contest vote on by the public for the best-decorated business in your area.

Office Celebrations

If your business operates in an office setting, or even remotely, encourage employees to get involved in the celebrations. Host a 4th of July potluck, encourage a patriotic dress-up day, or offer an incentive for employees to get involved in a local event. The most important thing here is to share the fun on your social media channels. Post company pictures, and encourage employees to tag the company in their personal posts. This not only boosts morale but also shows your audience the human side of your business.

Final Thoughts

The 4th of July is a fantastic opportunity to showcase what makes your business unique. By hosting events, creating themed content, offering promotions, engaging with the community, and publicly celebrating, you can make a memorable impact on your audience. With these ideas, you can immediately start planning your 4th of July strategy and ensure your business stands out during this festive season. Remember, the key is to be creative, engaging, and true to what makes your business unique. So, fire up the grill, put up those decorations, and get ready to make this Independence Day a celebration of your business’s success and individuality. Let’s make sure everyone hangs on to all of their fingers, though.

Happy 4th of July!
